You must register for both days to receive the full training and three year certificate.Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or crisis.YMHFA is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to:Recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge.Listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge.Refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.Topics covered include:AnxietyDepressionSubstance useDisorders in which psychosis may occurDisruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD)Eating disordersA portion of the training will focus on:Information on common substances used by youth.Harm reduction strategies and the importance of reducing risks.How to administer Naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses, with free Naloxone kits available for participants to take home.On the second day of the training, lunch will be provided by AmeriHealth Caritas, and we will host a working lunch where community mental health partners will discuss the services they offer and answer participants' questions.By the end of the course, participants will be able to:Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Youth Mental Health First Aider.Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth.Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development.Understand substance use, the principles of harm reduction, and the steps to administer Naloxone effectively.Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE).Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid.https://youtu.be/RxBpxHcWK-Q?si=GcEuS23uHxtUZhYG  https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/2d022960-0676-11f1-97b1-bfc352c3f941-rimg-w1200-h294-dcffffff-gmir.jpg DAY ONE🕑: 10:00 AM - 12:30 PMDay One: Part OneHost: Maria Suarez (she/her) - YMCA of WNCInfo: We will explore the importance of self-care and guide participants in creating a personalized self-care action plan using the eight dimensions of wellness. Participants will also be introduced to the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) and examine how culture and health intersect within the realm of mental health. Additionally, we will cover the role of a Youth Mental Health First Aider, enhance our understanding of mental health and mental illness, address mental health stigma, and identify the risk and protective factors that influence mental well-being.🕑: 12:30 PM - 01:30 PMLUNCH - on your own Info: Participants will have a lunch break, and lunch will be on your own. This session will also provide an overview of adolescent development and examine the impact of social media on youth well-being.DAY TWO🕑: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PMDay Two: Part OneHost: Maria (she/her) - YMCA of WNCInfo: We will explore the distinction between signs and symptoms, discuss when they become challenges, and learn how to assess for risk of suicide or self-harm, including a clear understanding of what self-harm is. The session will include a deep dive into the ALGEE action plan, focusing on its application in a variety of scenarios. Participants will also gain insight into what constitutes a crisis and effective strategies for de-escalation.🕑: 12:00 PM - 01:00 PMWorking LunchInfo: Lunch will be provided by AmeriHealth Caritas, and participants are invited to enjoy their meal while engaging with mental health community partners. During this time, partners will discuss their services and answer any questions. Participation in the working lunch is optional—those who prefer may opt out and have lunch on their own.🕑: 01:00 PM - 02:00 AMSubstance Use Training Host: Maria (she/her) - YMCA of WNCInfo: We will cover common substances, their street names, and harm reduction strategies. Participants will receive an overview of Naloxone, including how it works and hands-on training in its administration.
