Square Peg in a Round Hole: Improving Circle Time in Early Childhood Settings

Spikes in behavior management challenges typically occur during circle time, which leads to a stressful impact on  our days as educators–but why do we do it? You may be surprised to learn that there is no licensing rule requiring daily circle time, though there is research to show that building community and relationships in early learning settings is a crucial first step to support children as they grow and learn. This training aims to review developmental benchmarks in young children in order to build a practice of using circle time as an opportunity to build community within your early childhood setting. We will look at ways of removing the traditional teacher-led activities associated with group time (calendar, weather, alphabet, etc.) into other elements of your day in order to utilize the classroom environment as a teacher. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their current routines, view videos of other circle times in various settings, and then to collaborate with other early childhood staff to reimagine this part of their day.

This training is for you if….

you feel worn down by your daily circle time routines

you enjoy engaging in (or are looking to begin engaging in) reflective practice

you need a totally new vision for the structure of your group time, or maybe just a refreshing new outlook on how this time can be used in a different way

you are aiming to build classroom community

you aren’t looking for behavior management techniques to encourage children to sit through calendar time
