Woodturning takes wood, either dried or green (just cut) and using a machine called a lathe, spins the wood while we apply tools to shape it. We explore different species of wood, learn how to use measuring tools, various kinds of calipers including the golden mean, pencil compass, and others. We learn how to use the drill press and the bandsaw to prep our wood. And we practice using the woodturning tools, called gouges, effectively. Embellish the turned work by using carving, paints, or wood burning (pyrography).In this session we will begin by learning how to turn a bowl! Understanding wood properties including grain direction is an important part of turning wood on a lathe.
