Join us for the opening reception of Give and Take curated by Colby Caldwell Friday, October 3rd from 5:00-8:00 at the Asheville Area Arts Council’s Gallery 1 Page Ave. Asheville, NC 28801 Suite 143A.
As part of the Asheville Area Arts Council’s (AAAC) Point of View, artists curate artists, exhibitions program: Give and Take curated by Colby Caldwell will be on display at the AAAC Gallery October 3 through November 8, 2014. Give and Take celebrates a spirit of collaboration through the pairing of Asheville artists with Washington DC area artists to explore the effects of technology on the artistic process. An exhibition of this kind weaves an important thread into the cultural fabric of Buncombe County by offering a tangible display from artists who have worked together across states to prove the importance of collaboration and the cross-pollination of talents. Curator, Colby Caldwell states: “When offered the chance to put together a show at the AAAC, my first impulse was to generate a context where creative types from Asheville and the DC area could come together and share ideas, and in the process, establish a connection where possible future collaborations might occur. The artists represented in Give and Take work in various mediums and have seemingly different conceptual underpinnings – the show suggests that the process that occurs in the making of the work reverberates in the finished piece, connecting the various attitudes and concerns for the respective artists. By contextualizing various mediums together in a room, one might think about how objects can relate to one another in surprising and rewarding ways. Give and Take also brings together artists who consider how technology impacts their particular studio practice. In a time period where artists have more choices and tools than ever to make work with, the narrative that process embeds can provide both a balance and an alternative to preconceived notions of representation and meaning. Give and Take offers an opportunity for viewers to decipher visual puzzles and the makers to generate new directions and insights via juxtaposition.”
