Commander Voodoo's sound is best described as "bayou yacht funk", an upbeat mix of original songs, unique arrangements, and mashups inspired by New Orleans R&B/funk, Southern soul, and jazz rock artists such as The Meters, Steely Dan, Jon Cleary, Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, and The Neville Brothers.
Keyboardist/singer/songwriter D. R. Commander (real name) was born on the bayou near the Louisiana border and spent 25 years performing, touring, and recording with other people's R&B/funk, jazz fusion, jam, and Americana bands before deciding that it might be fun to front his own band for a lot less money. An aficionado of all things New Orleans, Commander is joined by Brian Bunce (bass) from Western New York via L.A. and Alex Tolini (drums) from Boston, both aficionados of the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast funk/soul and jazz rock scenes.
They will be performing two full sets, including some Mardi Gras classics from The Meters, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and others to kick off the season.
Commander Voodoo is available for club gigs, concerts, festivals, parties (especially if crawfish is involved), weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, and really awkward funerals. Dancing shoes optional but recommended.
