Join Dubuque County Conservation staff for a guided wagon ride through the scenic Heritage Trail corridor, timed to coincide with the projected peak of fall color. As you travel along the trail, discover the fascinating history and rugged landscape that have made this 26-mile corridor a favorite destination for thousands of hikers and bicyclists each year.

Before it became a popular recreational trail, the Heritage Trail was a bustling railroad route winding through a dramatic valley nearly 450 feet deep. The railroad connected the historic mining and mill towns that once thrived throughout the area. Along the way, you'll hear stories of the communities, industries, and significant natural and historic features that shaped this unique landscape.

The wagon ride is approximately 90–120 minutes and is geared toward, but not limited to, outdoor enthusiasts with limited mobility. The wagon has three steps with a railing for boarding as well as a gradual incline ramp.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour. The wagon will depart promptly at the scheduled time.

Most of the trail is shaded by trees, but we recommend bringing water, sunscreen, and a hat. A restroom stop will also be included during the tour.

Come enjoy the fall colors, learn the stories of the Heritage Trail, and experience this beautiful landscape from a different perspective.
