Webinar: Investigating obesity in the UK - what data can I use?

This session is jointly organised by CLOSER and the UK Data Service as part of the ESRC funded data resource's collaborative webinar series, ESRC data resources: discovering data and how to use it.

About the webinar

This webinar is for those who would like to know more about sources of data available for investigating obesity. It will focus particularly on longitudinal, cross-sectional, administrative and consumer data.

The session will explore:

the range of longitudinal data available, including an example of how researchers can utilise harmonised data, such as the CLOSER-funded set of harmonised BMI measures, for cross-study investigations

the use of cross-sectional data sources currently available from the UK Data Service

the value of using consumer data

The first 45 minutes of the webinar will be devoted to presentations from Prof Rebecca Hardy (UCL), Dr Vanessa Higgins (UK Data Service), and Dr Michelle Morris (Consumer Data Research Centre) followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

About the webinar series

This March, the ESRC’s funded data resources will run a series of collaborative webinars highlighting the wide range of data sources ready and waiting to be explored and utilised by researchers and academics.

Split into four separate sessions and each focusing on a different research topic, the series aims to help novice as well as experienced data users discover new data sources that could aid their own investigations. The research topics to be featured are as follows;

Education

Journey to work

Ethnicity and migration

Obesity

Each hour long webinar will consist of 2-3 presentations from expert researchers, examples of how different data sources have been used in real research case studies, as well as time set aside for participants to pose questions and ask our presenters for advice.

The webinar series is the result of a collaboration between a number of ESRC-funded resource centres working together to promote the value and use of social science data. The collaboration is made up of six organisations including; CLOSER, Understanding Society, the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS), the UK Data Service (UKDS), the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), the Administrative Data Research Network (ADRN), and the three ESRC funded big data centres; the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), the ESRC Business and Local Government Data Research Centre (BLG) and Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC).
