What is a crankie?
Crankies are hand-cranked illustrated scrolls that bring stories to life. They can be made of fabric, paper, fiber, paint, and all sorts of other art media. Click here to see an example of one!

About Annick Odom
Annick Odom is a Belgian-American multi-instrumentalist, composer, folk singer, crankie maker, storyteller, and square dance caller. Known for her evocative blend of Appalachian traditions, contemporary composition, and narrative performance, her work bridges the old and the new—braiding together field recordings, original songs, and community voices into something wholly her own. Described as “hauntingly beautiful” (Classical Post) and “an adventure in every song” (VPRO), her music moves fluidly between the intimate and the expansive. An avid supporter of fellow composers, Annick’s long-term solo project West Virginia, My Home celebrates Appalachian cultural heritage by weaving archival ballads and oral histories with newly commissioned works. This evolving project features bass/voice compositions accompanied by crankie visuals and has commissioned over 20 new scores. Her original compositions “Rise Early” and “Seven Bones” were adapted into animated films, both of which were selected for the West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival.

About Rebecca Wudarski
Based out of the small mountain town of Thomas, W.V., Rebecca is a full-time artist and musician. Her current music project is a one-woman-band where she concurrently plays guitar, bass drum, hi-hat, and sings. In this configuration she creates an indie-folk sound with original songwriting, and traditional folk songs re-imagined by smashing together elements of swing, indie rock, modern pop, and old-time. Rebecca has cultivated a unique sound produced with a high level of musicianship, energy, creativity, and emotion; it’s footslogging heartbreak with a beat you can dance to. Rebecca recently studied painting at Davis and Elkins College from 2012-2014. Her paintings are illustrative, figurative, and impressionistic. Her appreciation of folk music and culture can be seen and felt in her work, as well as her love for visual chaos, color, absurdity, and emotion.

About The Weevils
Emerging out of a friendship forged by fiddling, The Weevils harness the power of the song. Each of them songwriters in their own right, their collaborative arrangements of twin (and sometimes triple) fiddles and tight vocal harmonies weave a tapestry that tells a story along with the lyrics. And you’ll sometimes hear them perform a traditional bluegrass or old-time number for good measure. The Weevils are Gray Buchanan (Hillbilly Biscuits, The Starlight Darlins), Mary Linscheid (The Wild Shoats), and Claire Silbernagel (Sweaty Hand String Band, Bear Essentials).
