- **Event Name**: Non-Violent Communication and Community Psychology for Movement/Wellness Teachers
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 22 Aug, 2026 at 12:00 pm – Sat, 22 Aug, 2026 at 02:00 pm
- **Event Description**: This training invites participants into a different relationship with movement one that centres body agency, consent, and awareness, while recognizing the broader systems that shape how we experience our bodies.

Drawing from Marshall Rosenberg, bell hooks, Paulo Freire, and Carl Rogers, this preparation introduces an interdisciplinary lens that bridges movement, psychology, and anti-oppressive pedagogy.

Participants will explore how Nonviolent Communication can be lived in the body and in teaching, not as a conflict tool, but as a way of relating:

-Emotions as signals of needs being met or unmet
-Movement as choice rather than compliance
-Teaching as facilitation, not control

Within a Pilates/Movement Teacher/Wellness Professional context, this means recognizing the role of the instructor as a relational and ethical presence:

Practicing congruence (alignment between what is taught and how it is embodied)
Supporting student autonomy and consent-based movement

Remaining aware of how power, language, and cues can reinforce or disrupt harm
This approach is informed by decolonizing and trauma-aware perspectives, including Dr. Jennifer Mullan and Kazu Haga, inviting critical reflection on the wellness industry itself.

Participants will be encouraged to examine:

- Where movement and wellness spaces may unintentionally reproduce whiteness, control, or hyper-individual responsibility
- The risk of pathologizing bodies or experiences without acknowledging systemic and relational factors
- How embodiment can be understood as a decolonizing practice, rooted in awareness, choice, and interdependence

This framing draws on community psychology, recognizing that well-being is not only individual, but shaped by social, cultural, and structural conditions. Pilates becomes one part of a broader ecosystem of care, not the sole solution.

Participants will engage with short readings and reflections to support:

Awareness of internal cues (sensations, emotions, resistance, desire)
Reflection on autonomy, safety, and pressure within movement spaces
Consideration of their responsibility as future teachers or facilitators

This workshop can be used towards 2hrs of Continuing Education Credits with Yoga Alliance.
