This year, we're exploring the official UN International Women's Day theme: "Balance the Scales" – a conversation about fair, inclusive, and accessible justice for every woman and girl.

Our panel features four inspiring voices: Juliet Kaberry, Dr Lili Pâquet, Kisani Upward, and Sam Coupland. In a conversational format, they'll discuss how the justice system operates now and how it affects women and girls, how justice systems are represented and can be reimagined in media and literature, the critical role of local leadership and policy in preventing harm, and the urgent need for culturally safe, community-led pathways that centre First Nations knowledge and resilience.

Our Panel:
Juliet Kaberry – Family Law specialist and Independent Children's Lawyer, bringing expertise in the justice system and accessibility for women and girls.

Dr Lili Pâquet – Senior Lecturer in Writing at UNE, researching crime writing and gender-based violence narratives, bringing insight into how women's stories are told and heard.

Dr Kisani Upward – Gamilaraay/Wiradjuri Yinarr, Registered Nurse and Senior Research Officer at the Djurali Centre, championing culturally safe, community-led pathways and First Nations knowledge.

Sam Coupland – Director of FMRC and Mayor of Armidale Regional Council, bringing local leadership and policy expertise to conversations around equality of opportunity for Women and Girls in the Armidale area.

Moderated by Samantha Crick, UNE Manager of Alumni, Advancement and EventsThe discussion will include time for open Q&A from the audience.
