New Orleans Strut was composed by Jack DeJohnette and arranged by Bob Washut. DeJohnette was one of the most significant jazz drummers of the last 60 years, having made important contributions to the groups of Charles Lloyd, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, and many more. He was also a fine pianist and composer and recorded a number of albums of his own music, which encompassed jazz, rock, funk, world music, and more. "New Orleans Strut" is a funk tune from his great 1984 album called Album Album and we will play it in tribute to DeJohnette, who died in October. Features solos by True Laboissonniere on alto sax and Mathias Severn on tenor sax.
Spherical is composed by Michael Brecker and arranged by Jamie Roth. Brecker, the most influential tenor saxophonist since John Coltrane, wrote this for the 1992 album Return of the Brecker Brothers. Michael's trumpet-playing brother Randy thought that some of the rhythmic ideas in the tune were reminiscent of Thelonious Sphere Monk's music, which inspired the title. Solos by Angelo Bernardi on trumpet and Mathias Severn on tenor sax.
Hackensack was composed by Thelonious Monk and arranged by Miho Hazama. The tune is named after the New Jersey city where the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder's parents lived. Van Gelder used the living room of his parents' house as a recording studio from 1946-1959, and countless jazz recordings were made there, including Monk's first recording of this tune. Features solos by True Laboissonniere on alto sax and Dylan Westfall on guitar.
Dance You Monster to My Soft Song, composed by Maria Schneider for her debut album Evanescence, was released in 1994. Schneider is the most influential composer of music for large jazz ensemble of the last 30 years. She is an NEA Jazz Master and a multiple Grammy winner. Solos on this by Mathias Severn on tenor sax and Hayden Hickcox on trumpet.
Avenue C was composed by Buck Clayton in the mid-1940s for the "Old Testament" Count Basie Orchestra.
