Led by local community member and University of Florida Certified Master Beekeeper Gregg Hitchings, this workshop will take place on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the historic setting of Arcadia Academy. Gregg, founder of the Belleview Valley Apiary, brings a wealth of knowledge and passion obtained through fifty-eight years of experience to share with participants about the craft of beekeeping.

Have you ever wondered if you would enjoy keeping honey bees? Is the thought of producing honey for your friends and family attractive? Do you feel your flower or vegetable garden is in need of a little assistance with pollination? Hobby beekeeping does appeal to many. Unfortunately, after buying bees and investing in the related equipment associated with bee husbandry, the majority of new beekeepers fail within the first two years with little to show for their efforts except frustration. In this day and age successful beekeeping is tricky and not for everyone. Still, long term success in beekeeping is possible to those willing to properly research, plan and set goals in achieving the knowledge and skills necessary in this craft.

This event is designed to provide an honest, unbiased look at not only what beekeeping entails but also explores the personal traits of successful beekeepers which provides them satisfaction and accomplishment in the long term. This event looks at the good, the bad and the difficult aspects of beekeeping and should be considered a prerequisite for any person entertaining the idea of keeping honey bees.

Designed to be accessible for all ages, there is a registration fee of $10 per person. Children under 18 can attend for free when accompanied by a parent. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from a local expert and explore not only if beekeeping is right for you but also, if you are right for beekeeping.
