- **Event Name**: Interspecies Dye Palettes: Biodiversity Weaving
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 01 Aug, 2026 at 12:00 pm – Sat, 01 Aug, 2026 at 03:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Dye with fungi and, as a community of hands, weave a large-scale "mycelial" web reflecting local biodiversity + interspecies relationshipsAbout this EventTo love native fungi is to protect native plants. This workshop will focus on Southern CA dye fungi and the plant species that enable their existence, or their “mycorrhizal host species”. Gathering as our own small ecosystem, participants will learn about different species of local dye fungi, the important ecosystems they are sustained by, and contexts behind challenges for our native biodiversity.Together we will collectively weave, knot, and braid fibers naturally dyed (with fungi and their plant hosts) into a large-scale symbolic mycelial web representing important species of the region’s biodiversity and interspecies dependence. As we trace these dire ecological entanglements, a fungal dye pot will be simmering in the background for a hands-on, introductory learning experience with the natural dye process. Participants will have the opportunity to dye a small silk bag received at the beginning of the workshop.***Other optional dyeables will be available for additional purchase day-of. All textiles will be prepared in advance. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events1/banners/94362600-8a41-11f1-887f-cf3a1ec20c70-rimg-w1200-h33-dca46330-gmir.jpg The class will include:⁕ Overview of select local dye fungi, their host species, and habitats⁕ Introduction to the natural dye process, materials, and tips⁕ Ethics, ecology, and stewardship for respectful encounters and harvesting⁕ Discussion on our place within the landscape, our agency, and native habitat protection⁕ Reference resources for continued research, learning, and thought~~Small 4"x6" silk drawstring bag fungally dyed together~~~~Educational art zine on the day’s topic, concepts, and info~~SUPPLY LIST!⁕ (required) Comfortable clothing and shoes that can get dirty*recommended*:⁕ Extra funds if you’d like to dye additional items (cash or venmo)⁕ Sunhat/sunscreen (this workshop will take place partially outdoors)⁕ Water bottle; personal snacks⁕ Outdoor seating for web-weaving outside, such as: Picnic blanket (some will be available), camp chair, floor cushion, etc⁕ Notebook and pen, sketchbook⁕ Personal 'weaving' tools such as for crochet, knitting, knotting techniques, etc (can be informal, formal, experimental, etc)*Scholarships*If this workshop cost would limit your ability to attend, please fill out the [scholarship form here]. Her practice is driven by native habitat conservation, stewardship, and the urgency of restoring environmental reciprocity into urban practices. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Environmental Art & Social Practice at UC Santa Cruz to expand interdisciplinary strategies for accessible communication of CA biodiversity, environmental exploitation, and active policy issues. She has a BFA in fine art, a professional background in horticulture, and over 10 years of experience working with sustainable natural color. She has taught over 30 workshops focused on wild fungi and invasive plant ecology, guest lectured at UC Berkeley and Laney College, and was a guest speaker at the 2024 California Invasive Plant Council Symposium.Select institutions worked with include: Fibershed, California College of the Arts, Theodore Payne Foundation, Alliance for Felix Cove, Point Reyes National Seashore, Save the Bay, Los Angeles Mycological SocietyWebsite: http://elissacallen.comIG: @slateandrust https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/982ded10-8a41-11f1-b92e-41b584fdb3c9-rimg-w592-h740-dca59248-gmir.jpg
