Amartithi is the anniversary of the day when Avatar Meher Baba dropped his physical form, on 31st January 1969 at 12:15 p.m. It is commemorated in a major gathering at Meherabad attended by more than 30,000 visitors from 30th January to 1st February of each year. During this 48-hour period a program of song, dance, and film continues all day and through much of the night on the stage near Meher Baba's Tomb. The climax of the event takes place on Amartithi day, 31st January, when, in honor of the physical passing of the Avatar of the Age, the assembled crowd keeps silence for 15 minutes, from 12 noon to 12:15 p.m.
The word "Amartithi" appears to have been coined by Meher Baba and means "deathless day" (Literally, amar, deathless; tithi, day, in Hindi). Also translated as "eternal date" or "date with the Eternal."
