- **Event Description**: Dancing in the 19th century was all about changing partners!  Social interaction was at the heart of dancing.  In the early 1800s it was considered improper to dance with the same partner more than once in an evening!  As dance styles changed, the roles of partners changed too.
In early Brisbane, the English country dance was in favour,  and having a partner was essential for the teamwork which featured a huge amount of community involvement.  The Quadrille was a new, more intimate dance, though still a communal activity, but then came the Waltz with its scandalous ballroom hold! 
Each dance reflected the history and values of the community.  Migrants brought their cultural stories and  traditions and these blended with the popular dances of the time. Over time, it was the couple dances that gained the greatest popularity with polkas, galops and schottisches.  Then the tremendous innovation of the progressive barn dance.  Never before was the changing of partners more profound!
Join us for an immersive experience as we dance through one hundred years of Brisbane’s dance history.  We will teach the dances and no experience is necessary.
