On Sunday, Mar. 8, the FELC Parish Choir will perform Henry Purcell’s “We Praise Thee, O Lord” at 3 p.m. at the Downtown Site as part of the Sacra Musica series of The Arthur Krempin School of Music & Art. Considered to be Purcell’s greatest choral achievement, it will be accompanied by the FELC Recorder Consort and harpsichord for authentic historic orchestration. The work was first performed in 1694.
The concert will also feature Eric Whitacre’s new publication of “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” a setting of the poem by Robert Frost, as well as the famous “Miserere” by Gregorio Allegri, traditionally sung on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Composed in the 1630’s and once restricted to the Sistine Chapel, this nine‑part work alternates between two choirs, including the “coro favorito” with its ethereal high soprano lines.
The FELC Handbell Choir will give the world premiere of “Forward!” by FELC Music Intern Lawrence Schreiner, who will conduct the work. They will also perform a new winter‑themed piece by local composer Sandra Eithun.
Free to attend, donations at this benefit event support programs of The Arthur Krempin School of Music & Art for children, especially those who would not otherwise have them. A dessert reception will follow the concert.
This event will also be streamed at www.felc.com/music.
