THE NATIONAL PARK DRENTS FRIESE WOLD 🌿
We’re kicking off the new year by exploring one of the oldest and most diverse landscapes in the Netherlands.
This natural gem lies on the border of Drenthe and Friesland. Officially declared a national park in 2000, its landscapes were shaped thousands of years ago by wind, sand and ancient farming traditions. With over 6,000 hectares of forests, shifting sands, heathlands and wetlands, it’s the second largest National Park in the Netherlands!
The park is also a home to heathland sheep and Exmoor ponies.
Highlights of the walk include:
🌾 Het Groote Veen - a peaceful peatland carpeted with mosses, where dragonflies dance in summer and sheep graze quietly (calm and timeless)
🗼 Aekingerzand Watchtower - offers stunning panoramic views across dunes, forests and endless horizons (perfect for those postcard photos)
💧 Grenspoel - a scenic border pond where Drenthe meets Friesland, surrounded by heath and forest (it’s a quiet spot to rest, watch waterbirds)
🌵 Aekingerzand - Kale Duinen (Bare or Bald Dunes) – vast golden sand dunes sculpted by the wind, surrounded by pine forests and purple heather (one of the park’s most iconic sights)
🏡 Drents Friese Wold Outdoor Centre – features the “Borderless Wold” exhibition with information about the nature in the park
☕ Bosbrasserie De Bosch Spot - is the new visitors centrum café, ideal for a nice cup of tea or coffee and something lekker to reward ourselves after a walk
