Here is a special pop-up songwriters treat, happening on a Wednesday, in addition to next week’s Thursday Songwriter’s round! 2 in one month! These professionals were so good, we had to bring them back for a second round! This round features Jeff Silvey, Dana Hunt Black, and Clayton Mathis. Indiana native, Jeff Silvey, a two-time winner of the ICA Producer of the Year for his work with Kali Rose, joined his first Gospel Quartet at the age of 14. An accomplished pianist and baritone singer, he grew up in the music business in the same hometown as Bill and Gloria Gaither. In 1986, he moved to Nashville to pursue his dream of music. During Jeff’s many years in Nashville, he made his mark in Christian and Country music, having over 300 songs recorded by famous acts such as George Strait, Easton Corbin, Gaither Vocal Band, Dallas Holm, 4 Him, The Oak Ridge Boys, DC Talk, and many more! His most notable accomplishments to date include earning four RIAA-certified Gold and two RIAA-certified Platinum albums in the Christian music industry, as well as four RIAA-certified Gold and one RIAA-certified Platinum singles in the Country music industry. He also won the 1997 Dove Award as an artist and singer, for his Country Album of the Year, “Little Bit of Faith”. He wrote for many years for Wimberley Music, owned by Erv Woosley, and is enjoying writing, producing, and mixing beachside in the Florida Panhandle, often traveling back to Nashville when needed, but his songs have been played and heard all over the world! Jeff performs at venues up and down the Emerald Coast, entertaining new friends and fans with his hilarious stories, amazing personality, smooth vocals, and unmatched piano-playing in his #barroompianonight set. Dana Hunt Black, a North Carolina native, began her journey as a songwriter in Nashville in 1993. Dana has written a number of songs recorded by George Strait, including two of his biggest hits “Check Yes or No” and “Write This Down”, both of which went on to become ASCAP Song of the Year. She also helped launch Gary Allan’s career writing his first giant hit “It Would Be You”. She and her husband Charlie Black (a Nashville Hall of Fame songwriter) co-wrote “I Know What I Want for Christmas” for George Strait. She has also written songs for Suzy Bogguss, Alan Jackson, Clay Walker, and more. Since 2004, Dana has called Port St. Joe, Florida her home. Her latest album, “That Thing You Do”, can be found on Amazon and iTunes, look for Charlie and Dana Hunt Black. Clayton Mathis was born and raised in Gaffney, SC in the small community of Goucher. While there, he attended Thickety Creek University where he learned proper fence building techniques, the art of bovine castration, cat fishing 101, tree identification, and was surrounded by some of the finest gospel music imaginable at one of the small community churches where he developed his love for music. His grandmother taught him piano until he quit at the age of 12. He tried guitar lessons around the age of 15, but couldn’t seem to grasp the technique of “practice”. There’s a large gap in between these times where his whereabouts were unknown. Mostly traveling the cosmos(as he says), he listened to every genre of music imaginable. From Ernest Tubb to Wu-Tang Clan to Guns N Roses to Thievery Corporation. He re-surfaced sometime around the year 2013 in the small town of Apalachicola. There, he was so inspired by his surroundings he decided to pick up the guitar again. He weaves around topics such as religion, politics, unanswered questions, relationships, drinking, love, and family. He had the privilege of having his brother produce his debut album in 2020 titled Welcome to the In Between in Columbia, SC. His most recent influences would be his brother, Townes Van Zandt, Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, and Drive By Truckers. A brewer/bar owner by day, you may find him slugging back beers and strumming on a guitar on a corner or in one of the local bars of Apalachicola, Florida.
