(NL) Hardcore. Zo noemde Jan Martens zijn grote doorbraak uit 2014. Elf jaar na de eerste opvoering herneemt de choreograaf deze wereldwijde publiekslieveling met acht nieuwe dansers. Opnieuw dient een uitputtend uur springen als middel om de mens achter de danser te tonen. Opnieuw vallen de maskers.

Martens liet zich voor THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER inspireren door Philippe Halsman. Die Amerikaanse fotograaf vroeg bekende mensen om te springen voor zijn camera. Doordat ze zich op niets anders dan hun sprong concentreerden, vergaten ze zichzelf. Maar ook als toeschouwer ben je verplicht je ware gelaat te tonen: vind je humor in de choreografie? Kan je genieten van andermans lijden? Wanneer wordt kunst entertainment? Dankzij de herinterpretatie van deze mijlpaal uit de repetitieve canon, brengt Martens een nieuwe generatie aan het zweten. Op het geluid van de sprongen en de kreten van de dansers, die zorgen voor de minimale muziek. Mis je jaarlijkse afspraak met Jan Martens niet, en spring mee in het onbekende.

(EN) Hardcore. This is how Jan Martens described his big breakthrough in 2014. Eleven years after its first performance, the choreographer revives this global audience favourite with eight new dancers. Once again, an exhausting hour of jumping serves as a means of revealing the person behind the dancer. The masks fall away once again.

Martens drew inspiration for THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER from Philippe Halsman. This American photographer asked famous individuals to jump for his camera. By focusing solely on their jump, they forgot themselves. But as a spectator, you too are compelled to reveal your true face: do you find humour in the choreography? Can you take pleasure in the suffering of others? When does art become entertainment? Through this reinterpretation of a milestone in the repetitive canon, Martens makes a new generation sweat.
