(EN) Welcome to the Montmartre of the nineteen thirties: music that inspires you to dance, play and dream. Pianists Frank Braley and Eric Le Sage perform Poulenc with graceful ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’: playfully and supplely, surprisingly and changeably. With a perfectly timed wink, a warm dash of ‘eau de vie’ and an elegant cloud of cigar smoke. If Poulenc happily wove together jazz, Mozartian melodies and rhythms from the Balinese gamelan in his concerto, then Milhaud preferred to seek inspiration in Brazil. The sultry rhythms of Rio de Janeiro act as the musical horizon of a ballet that enjoys colouring outside the lines of reality. Gershwin wanted to be taken seriously as a classical composer on the other side of the ocean, but primarily prospered on Broadway. His opera Porgy and Bess is the absolutely brilliant result of this straddling.

Pianisten Frank Braley en Eric Le Sage brengen Poulenc met gracieus ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’: speels en soepel, verrassend en veranderlijk. Met een perfect getimede knipoog, een warme scheut ‘eau de vie’ en een elegante wolk sigarenrook. Weefde Poulenc in zijn concerto jazz, mozartiaanse melodieën en ritmes uit de Balinese gamelan vrolijk aan elkaar, dan zocht Milhaud de inspiratie liever in Brazilië. De broeierige ritmes van Rio de Janeiro vormen de muzikale horizon van een ballet dat gretig buiten de lijnen van de werkelijkheid kleurt. Gershwin wilde aan de andere kant van de oceaan graag serieus genomen worden als klassieke componist, maar floreerde vooral op Broadway. Zijn opera Porgy and Bess is het ronduit geniale resultaat van die spreidstand.
