Based on the UNESCO criteria on language vitality, the Kapampángan Language is definitively endangered. More and more Kapampángan parents are no longer passing down their mother tongue to their children. Many of them believe that denying their children their mother tongue and raising them to speak in the more dominant Philippine national language, Tagalog (Filipino), will help them get ahead in Philippine society.

As the first generation of Tagálog-speakers born of Kapampángan parents and raised within the Kapampángan homeland grow into adulthood, we begin to question how this linguitic anomaly affect their sense of identity and belongingness to the indigenous Kapampángan community.

In this lecture-forum which  Soleil Ilyanna Lansang Cruz also presented at the 2025 NAKEM Conference at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, USA and the international linguistics conference in Iloilo, she will discuss the effects of language erosion on the individual’s sense of identity and belongingness based on her research.
