Ever wondered why we Kapampángans call this bloody practice of self-flagellation DARÁMÉ and not "peniténsia"? That is because it had nothing to do at all with penance or penitence. 

DARÁMÉ, MÁNDARÁMÉ and PÁMANDARÁME comes from the word DÁMÉ 'to share in the suffering of others.'

In this lecture, we shall explore the non-Christian origins of the PÁMANDARÁMÉ and trace the possible roots of this Kapampángan practice to our own indigenous past.
