It dwells in the borderlands between inescapable history and limitless possibility, emerging from the vicious conflicts of a past that threaten to become dead ends in the present, while still daring to imagine an absolutely new future shaped by hope, love, faith, repair, and reinvention. This exhibition delves into the dream as both ideal and delusion. Amerikan Dream reflects a nation off kilter but in search of balance, familiar but fractured, unevenly split between deprivation and abundance. What is exceptionally “Amerikan” about a dream? What happens to those who find themselves trapped in a dream that is not their own? Who decides which dreams become reality? The works resonate in the tension between aspiration and disillusionment, capturing what it means to live in a world that often feels surreal—at times a nightmarish entrapment, at other times as if every conceivable wish fulfillment is right here. Reality blurs, histories echo, and the future feels at once within reach and just out of focus. Together, the pieces in Amerikan Dream grapple with survival, resilience, and imagination as essential acts of resistance to reigning delusions, but also as acts of devotion rooted in fidelity to foundational ideals.
