About the event

Wayne's World w/author Madeline ffitch (A Thousand Words)
A Thousand Words invites writers, poets, and novelists to Amherst Cinema, asking each guest to program a film accompanying a discussion around their use of the written word in relationship to the moving image. Discover how the selected film inspires them, and where it intersects with their practice.

For this screening of WAYNE'S WORLD, we are joined by writer Madeline ffitch.

Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch, WAYNE'S WORLD follows two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey).

From Wayne's basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called "Wayne's World" on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to produce a big-budget version of "Wayne's World"—and he also wants Wayne's girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere).

Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra.

Madeline ffitch is the author of the short story collection Valparaiso, Round the Horn and the novel Stay and Fight, which was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Lamda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction, the Washington State Book Award, the LA Times Book Award, and was the 2023 Ohio Center for the Book pick for the National Book Festival. She is the recipient of an O. Henry Award and her story "Seeing Through Maps" was chosen for the 2024 Best American Short Stories anthology. ffitch's writing has appeared in Harper's Magazine, The Paris Review, Granta, Tin House, and elsewhere. Her novel about Appalachian antifascism is forthcoming from Farrar, Straus and Giroux. She writes and organizes in Appalachian Ohio.
