They say the dead tell no tales, but forensic scientists piece together stories of the past from the bones buried in New England cemeteries. 

The Historical Society of Amherst is thrilled to welcome bioarchaeologist Alex Garcia-Putnam, Assistant Director of the Forensic Anthropology Identification and Recovery Lab at UNH. 

Alex studies human skeletal remains and burials and is particularly interested in understanding and protecting historic cemeteries and those interred within them. Currently he’s helping to uncover the oft-forgotten graves and tales of those who lived, worked, and died at poor farms. Poor Farms were historic institutions that housed and fed the poor, elderly, and other marginalized individuals in exchange for agricultural labor. 

Join us to hear Alex will talk about his work at the Brentwood Poor Farm Cemetery, and his current work locating, mapping, and helping to protect other such sites across New Hampshire.
