I’ve spent a lot of my life interested (or obsessed...depends on who you ask) in the things that make us unique.

The strange parts. The contradictions. The things we hide, exaggerate, fake, protect, celebrate, and maybe...just maybe... eventually learn to love about ourselves.

Different Up Close is a new body of paintings, sculpture, and assemblage built around that idea.

I’ve never really felt like I fit into this modern world of ours. I always seem to be "missing the point."

Maybe that’s why I’m been drawn to people who are radically themselves. People who have found that finding their place isn't all its cracked up to be. The people who are still looking. The people who have decided they’d rather make their own version of "reality".

We live in a time that constantly asks us to sort people. Friend or enemy. Good or bad. Us or them. We’re told who belongs, who doesn’t, who to fear, and whose lives should matter more.

But the closer we get to other people, the more we realize that “normal” isn’t normal at all. It’s the quirks that make humans so damn interesting.

This work is about exploring the distances that have been created between us. 

It’s about belonging and alienation. Love and fear. The stories we invent about each other. The strange ways we build identities and communities. And my growing suspicion that the people we call “other” are usually a lot more like us than we’d care to admit.

I don’t want a world where we all agree, look alike, live alike, or make the same damn things.

Sameness is boring. Art usually isn’t. Especially when you see it up close.
