Join us for an inspiring Artist Talk and FREE Hands-On Texture Class with Alex Johnmeyer on Friday, September 18th, from 6:30–8:30 PM at Elysian Gallery & Cafe located at 419 E Broadway, Alton, IL 62002. Free & Open to the Public, Ages 18+

NOTE: If you are planning to participate in the texture class, PLEASE mark yourself as GOING so Alex knows how much clay & supplies to BUY… there is absolutely no fee to attend! 😁💜

This special evening offers a behind-the-scenes look at Alex’s journey as a professional artist, followed by an opportunity to get creative and experiment with texture techniques in your own artwork. 

Outside food is welcome, and the café will have plenty of non‑alcoholic drinks available — coffee, teas, sodas, and more. 

ARTIST TALK, 6:30–7:30 PM 🎨
Alex will share his 17-year journey as a professional artist, discussing how he discovered his artistic voice and how his work has evolved throughout his career. He’ll explore the creative and technical processes behind his paintings, the importance of authenticity in his practice, and the experiences that have shaped his career. Alex will also discuss how his lived experience as a queer and transgender man has influenced both his artwork and his path as a professional artist.

FREE TEXTURE CLASS, 7:30–8:30 PM 
Following the artist talk, Alex will lead a one-hour, hands-on class focused on incorporating texture into your own artwork. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with air-dry clay, tools, and a variety of textural techniques that can be incorporated into their own creative practice.

Bring a notebook and be ready to take lots of notes! Participants may choose to leave their wet clay pieces at Elysian Gallery to pick them up a few days later, or take their pieces home with them that evening.

Whether you're an artist looking to expand your techniques, a collector interested in the stories behind the artwork, or simply curious about the creative process, this evening promises an engaging exploration of art, authenticity, identity, and creative practice.

ABOUT ALEX:
Alex Johnmeyer is a St. Louis-based multidisciplinary realist whose work blends vibrant color, texture, and symbolism to explore themes of nostalgia, identity, and lived experience. Working in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and texture media, he creates emotionally resonant works that invite viewers to reconnect with memory and personal narrative. Beyond his studio practice, Alex has spent more than 13 years serving the arts and LGBTQIA2S+ communities through nonprofit leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, helping cultivate inclusive spaces where artists and communities can thrive.
