Canticle Farm has three main goals in offering the program:

Connecting With Nature.
Like many of you and generations of America’s grandparents, we believe that outdoor play and exploration are the best ways to connect children with nature. Our summer program will be exploring gardens that a) feed, b) provide art and beauty, c) attract wildlife, and d) are designed for learning. 

Safety
In my experiences working with grade, middle, and high school students on the farm, I have noticed over and over how children react to bugs, worms, spiders, and even toads—with a jump in fear or an expression of disgust.  As a main focus, we will be teaching the children which crawlies and plants are safe to touch, and which ones are not. We will be exploring only the most shallow creek beds. We will be trekking only the least threatening pathways.

Our intention is to teach proper and necessary caution. Not fear.

Play
For play, we will have water games, dance, scarf juggling, parachute fitness, and the start of a brand-new tree house in the “perfect old tree.” This play is structured. In addition, we will have free-play in our newly constructed, state-of-the-art primitive mud kitchen.

Two separate sessions we will have a fire to roast lunch in after the class.

Canticle Farm’s Outdoor Classroom will be in session every Tuesday (with Thursday as a rain date) from 7/28-8/18. Cost is $100.00 and a sliding scale is available; contact our Community Engagement Coordinator, Isaac Spaeth, at isaac@canticlefarm.org to discuss price alternatives.  There is also an option at checkout to place a "sliding scale request" in your cart and "purchase" it at no charge, then Isaac will reach out to you to set a price.  All are welcome!

Parents will be asked to sign a release form for liability purposes, as well as an optional form that will allow us to take pictures of your child learning, playing, and creating (pics are for future marketing purposes).

Overarching Intention
We at Canticle Farm believe that if you teach children how to find adventure and fun outdoors when they are young, they will want to spend time outdoors.

If you are a parent who missed the opportunity to explore the outdoors when you were a child, please know you can join us in our Outdoor Classroom along with your child. This program will connect you with your inner child.
