- **Event Description**: Join Poet Rachael Johnson for a night of poetry, music, & spoken word. Rachael will be joined by poets Byron Aspaas, Amber McCrary, Marissa Prada, and musician Gerald Chavez. This event is Co-Produced with Community Publishing (www.communitypublishing.org) an Albuquerque owned and operated independent media company specializing in providing a platform for artists of all mediums from underrepresented communities! 

Host :: Rachael Johnson is a disabled, neurodivergent Diné writer/poet/artist from the Chuska Mountain foothills of the Navajo Nation, currently living in Albuquerque. She is Táchii’nii, born for Kinyaa’áanii. Her prose and poetry have been published in The Diné Reader: An Anthology of Navajo Literature, Poetry Northwest, Wordgathering, Prairie Schooner, among others. Her poetry/photography chapbook, My Body is an Ill-fitting Costume, was published by Abalone Mountain Press in 2023. 

Featured Poet ::  Byron Aspaas is Diné. He is Táchii'nii, born for Tódich'iinii and raised within the four sacred mountains of Dinétah. Byron received his BFA and MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts in creative writing. His work can be found in Denver Quarterly, Santa Fe Noir, Shapes of Native Nonfiction: Collected Essays by Contemporary Writers and The Diné Reader. He works as poetry mentor for Western Colorado University's Graduate Program in Creative Writing. He lives with his partner, six dogs, and four cats.

Featured Poet :: Marissa Prada is a poet, author, spoken word artist, and publisher from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She began writing poetry in high school to cope with teenage stress and trauma. She has been a featured reader at multiple local and international events. Her work ranges from social justice issues and mental health, to humorous parody pieces, to sensual erotica.
Marissa hosts weekly online open mics for her online platform, The Word is Write, and hosted live in person at the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City. She was recently a featured reader at the NYC Poetry Festival. Marissa is the founder of the female-forward, Albuquerque-based press, Read or Green Books, and is the Co-Founder and Creative Director for The Word is Write on Facebook & Instagram. Marissa is a founding member of the worldwide women’s poetry group, Tesoro.

Featured Poet :: Amber McCrary is a Diné poet, zinester, and publisher. She is Red House Clan born for Mexican people. Her debut poetry collection, Blue Corn Tongue: Poems in the Mouth of the Desert, is out now from the University of Arizona Press. She founded Abalone Mountain Press, which centers indigenous authors. You can find her poems, interviews, and art at Yellow Medicine Review, POETRY magazine, Poets and Writers magazine, The Navajo Times, Santa Fe Literary Review, and Hayden's Ferry Review. 

Featured Musician :: Gerald Chavez started playing guitar in the early 70s around Albuquerque. He formed the group Govinda, a jazz rock fusion group. They played original music. He later studied flamenco guitar in Spain and accompanied dance classes at the University of New Mexico. He also taught self-defense at the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico. He is currently collaborating with the Diné poet, Rachael Johnson. Gerald is working with the Shakti Deluxe guitar made by Mirko Borghino in Italy. The Shakti Guitar is a 13 string instrument with seven sympathetic strings. The collaboration with Ms Johnson will be a free-form format. 

Expressions Gallery is a non-profit arts gallery dedicated to providing a  physical platform for artists of all mediums that call New Mexico their home! All are welcome!
