The Elk Creek Township Historical Society hosts 2026's third session of the 5th Annual Speaker Series welcoming Jill Meszaros, sharing her passion of quilts with her program, “Bed Turning” featuring antique and vintage quilts.
This interactive presentation invites guests to bring a quilt from home to share, if they wish. Our Speaker will supplement the program with quilts from her own collection—primarily sourced from northwest Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio—to help fill in any time period gaps. Quilts are stacked (typically by age) on tables, and as each one is "turned," she will discuss its estimated date, fabrics, patterns, construction techniques, and the historical context.
The format not only encourages participation but also offers a rich visual journey through 19th- and 20th-century quilt history. Attendees often walk away with a deeper appreciation of the textile traditions in our region—and a bit more insight into the heirlooms they treasure.
Jill Meszaros is a quilt historian and documentarian based in Cambridge Springs, PA, a member of the American Quilt Study Group, the Midwest Fabric Study Group, and the American Quilter’s Society. She has also completed the Quilt Appraisal Course through AQS and is currently working toward her certification.
This will be an informal presentation, so please feel free to come with questions as our atmosphere lends itself to be a cozy and comfortable safe space to ask questions and share your stories and experiences!
The event is planned to be held in person with a Live Feed available on our Facebook Page as long as our technology cooperates, but will be exclusively streamed online as a alternate option if we are unable to host in-person. This event is free, but donations are always appreciated and go directly towards the continuing maintenance and restoration of The Little Church on the Hill by The Elk Creek Township Historical Society.
Our mission with the Speaker Series is to benefit our Community with topics relating to history, local life, and culture. If you have any suggestions of topics you'd like to see in a future presentation or are interested in presenting, please contact us.
Come learn about this element of history and homesteading with us!
