The Independent Bistro for Arts & Culture is excited to welcome ceramic artist @LaurenJeanMcLaughlin to Albemarle for a special hands-on workshop on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a relaxed dinner with the artist.

This workshop is part of our Summer Arts & Culture Series and is made possible through the support of Proximity 2 Humanity, a nonprofit organization that believes in the power of art to create dialogue, strengthen communities, and inspire positive change.

Rather than simply teaching a class, Lauren will guide participants through a collaborative creative process. Together, we will explore stories, memories, and impressions of Albemarle and transform them into a collection of ceramic tiles using Lauren's signature sgraffito technique.

Each participant will create one or more tiles that will become part of a larger community artwork. Lauren will create the centerpiece, and after the workshop the tiles will be glazed, fired, and assembled into a permanent installation celebrating Albemarle and the people who call it home.

Because of the advanced nature of the project, priority will be given to individuals who have participated in previous Bistro workshops or who have prior ceramics or pottery experience.

This is an opportunity to learn from an accomplished artist, contribute to a lasting public artwork, and spend an afternoon creating alongside fellow makers.
