As winter settles in and the days grow shorter, the world glows with a quiet kind of magic. In this immersive 4-hour workshop, you’ll explore the poetic beauty of twilight in winter—from violet shadows stretching across snow to the warm flicker of lamplight against a cool dusk sky.
Working in oils, you’ll learn to:
- Build strong value structures for low-light compositions
- Mix atmospheric cools and glowing warm accents
- Capture the dance between natural light and artificial glow
- Use soft edges to evoke mood and distance
- Work alla prima to complete a painting in one expressive sitting
We’ll work from reference photos provided by the instructor—or feel free to bring your own winter twilight inspiration. You’ll leave with a finished painting and fresh techniques to carry into your seasonal studio practice. Perfect for painters looking to deepen their understanding of light, color, and emotional connection to their subject.

Please note that our classes are typically held in the lower level of Arlene's. Because access to the lower level is available only by stair, please let us know if using the stairs presents any difficulty for you in advance of the class so we can make alternate arrangements. We want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy and participate in our classes.
