There is a moment before a painting becomes a painting—a space where thought, memory, image, and gesture meet. The Living Journal is a three‑week creative practice that invites you to work inside that space, using your sketchbook as both container and catalyst. Each session begins with an open‑ended prompt designed to spark direction rather than prescribe it. You’ll move fluidly between writing and image, letting one inform the other as you build pages that hold contrast, tension, and resolution. This is a working studio class meant for exploration, experimentation, and forward motion.

Over three weeks, you’ll explore:
- Layered mixed media — watercolor, ink, collage, and drawing
- Intuitive mark‑making and responsive color
- Writing as a generative tool for visual work
- Building dynamic sketchbook pages through layering and composition

This sketchbook‑based, mixed‑media class is ideal for artists looking to deepen their creative process, reconnect with play, or develop a more intentional studio practice. Expect to produce, experiment, and discover new pathways in your work. Supplies are not included in the class fee. A PDF supply list is available in the class description.

NOTE: For all administrative questions—such as registration issues, cancellations, or workshop attendance—please contact Arlene’s directly. Instructors are not responsible for handling these matters. You can reach us at arlenesartist@gmail.com or call during store hours at (518) 482-8881.

Our courses are typically held in the lower level of Arlene's. Because access to the lower level is available only by stair, please let us know if using the stairs presents any difficulty for you in advance of the class so we can make alternate arrangements. We want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy and participate in our classes.
