Open auditions for Inspecting Carol will be held at Albany Civic Theater on Monday, September 21st and Tuesday, September 22nd. Auditions will begin promptly at 7:30 PM and run until around 9:15 PM. Auditioners are strongly encouraged to attend both nights, but it is not required. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Callbacks will be held by invitation-only as needed on Wednesday, September 23rd.

Plan to arrive early with enough time to fill out an audition form before auditions start. Please write clearly, especially your contact information. Headshots and resumes are not required, but always appreciated.

Bring a full list of your conflicts between September 24th-December 20th, weekends included. Please refer to the important dates listed below.

Important dates:
• Rehearsals:  Mondays-Thursdays, typically 7-9 PM
• First read through: Thursday, September 24th at 6:30 PM at Pop’s Branding Iron in Albany
• Take Stage: Sunday, November 8 at 2 PM
• Work days: Fridays and Saturdays after take stage 
• Retreat: Saturday, November 21 all day
• Tech rehearsals: Monday, November 30 - Thursday, December 3
• Performances: December 4, 5, 6(m), 11, 12(cc), 13(m, cc), 17, 18, 19, 2026
• Set Strike: Sunday, December 20


What to prepare/expect:
• Monday/Tuesday: Auditioners will be doing group warm ups (physical), as well as doing cold reads from the script. Dress in comfortable clothes. You will be called up with a group of other actors and will “act” out a specific area of the script. We will read you in characters you are interested in and those you are not interested in. Once the section is complete you can sit back down until you are called again.
• Wednesday: Callbacks by invitation only (if needed).


About the show:
A Christmas Carol meets The Government Inspector meets Noises Off in this hilarious hit from Seattle. A man who asks to audition at a small theater is mistaken for an informer for the National Endowment for the Arts. Everyone caters to the bewildered wannabe actor, and he is given a role in the current production, A Christmas Carol. Everything goes wrong and hilarity is piled upon hilarity. Perfect anytime, this delight is particularly appropriate at Christmas.

Cast of characters*:
• MJ: The over-the-top stage manager who also plays Martha Cratchit in the show within a show.
• Wayne: The wannabe actor looking for a new career. Insists every character should be read as King Richard III. Is mistaken for the inspector. The company lets them make terrible changes because they think they will get money for the theater. Easily excitable.
• Zorah: The insane, Lithuanian director: Extremely temperamental and constantly on the verge of a meltdown. Founding director of the Soapbox Playhouse. Extremely self-concerned.
• Luther: The boy who is entirely way too big to be playing Tiny Tim anymore. Leaves halfway after Act I because he has booked a TV show.
• Dorothy: The British dialect coach who also plays Emily Cratchit. Trying to push her duo show with her husband Sydney on Wayne.
• Sydney: Plays the ghost of Jacob Marley and Fezziwig. Constantly making noise with his ghostly chains, even as Fezziwig.
• Phil: Plays Bob Cratchit. Is in love with Zorah due to their one night stand.
• Walter: The company's first ethnic actor, hired on as a "multi-cultural ethnic outreach". Doesn't know any of their lines. Plays all three ghosts. Constantly laments about having to point at everything using a WHITE hand. Good natured but excitable.
• Kevin: The company's financial director. Nervous eater, tries to suck up to the inspector as much as possible. Afraid of Zorah.
• Bart: A semi-douchey person, assists stage manager, on stage during most of the show and plays all of the other male roles in the show.
• Larry: Plays Ebenezer Scrooge. Middle-aged person whose spouse recently left. Emotions are buried and instead acts out by trying to put as much social justice in the show. Did the show in Spanish last. Tough personality, vain, and a founding member of the theater group.
• Betty: The inspector for the National Endowment of the Arts. Eventually, ends up in the show as a queen since it is the only costume they had left in stock.

*Characters can be played by actors of different ethnicities and genders. This casting is flexible, allowing for non-traditional casting choices, which means that all characters originally written for any actor can be portrayed by a woman, male, female presenting, and/or male presenting of all ethnicities and ages. This approach aligns with contemporary practices in theater that promote diversity and inclusivity in casting decisions.
