Since retiring from more than 30 years in the diplomatic service in 2017, David Stuart has been writing about Americans’ engagement with colonial Australia. His recent published work can be found in such journals as History Compass, Rhode Island History and The Great Circle. His research has spanned the different dimensions of American contact and influence, including the main periods of American whaling in and off Australian waters; their role in colonial sealing; trade as it evolved from the earliest years of the colony in Port Jackson; scientific investigation and co-operation; the establishment of an official United States presence in Australia; and the ways in which transportation was used to exile and marginalize political dissidents created an unlikely connection between the Australian colonies and the Young Republic. This visit to Albany will be David’s fourth investigating the role of Americans in the Southwest.

David’s current priority is to convert this work into a book that will focus on a dozen American visitors whose individual histories are worth telling in their own right but which also capture the various facets of early American contacts. Little of the existing literature on American contacts with the colonies in the period before the Gold Rushes has integrated extensive research into American archival collections with contemporary sources into Australia’s colonial history. David’s presentation will outline the results of his efforts to do so, including on the individuals and topics of most direct relevance to Western Australia.
