As quickly as it came, the eddy of light vanished back into the dim twilight sky. Leaves ruffled as the energy shifted through Moonbrush Forest. The trees, reaching nearly as high as a mountain, groaned and seemed to move their weight as they stretched their branches. Mist churned on the forest floor, creating a sheet of haze. Eyes poked out from hidden holes shaded with greenery— observing the large circle of what once was lush forest floor— now stood charred bramble still smoking from the smoldering light.  Countless masked fae littered the seething black area, lost in a daze or still unconscious. Curious eyes formed into silhouettes of sprites, korreds, brownies, and devas flitting around. A nosy sprite landed on the knee of an unconscious fae, peering into the ornate mask that concealed half of their face. The fae jolted upright, startled by the little sprite, sending it fluttering back into the dim shadows. The shadows and mist seemed to grow as the faerie departed, taking up the space where the sprite had been. It continued to creep towards the litter of masked fae as a living thing, breathing and sucking up the light. The fae backed away only to run into the unconscious others. Small lights started to glow among the foliage in the trees, making the shadows halt their pursuit and slowly creep away. The lights multiplied as they circled down from the trees and danced towards the strangers. The fireflies circled around their heads, waking the rest from a dreamless sleep. Confused murmurs grew from the crowd as the masked fae began to rise, entranced by the fireflies and devas who continued to fly closer. A phenomena like this only occurs once every 700 years in Faerie— an incomprehensible length of time to anyone not from the realm. When the planes of the multiverse align just right, a cataclysmic event happens— siphoning energy from each plane until it is naturally drawn to Faerie’s arcane and sporadic energy. Only this time, it latched onto living beings. The masked fae, entranced by their heightened senses, started to move through the forest and take in their surroundings. Towering sharp mountains could be seen slicing through the dense canopy of the forest, looming and inviting them to dare climb their peaks. A sparkling sky shrouded in eternal twilight winked through the leaves, flashing the outlanders with occasional glimpses of starlight. Surrounding the burned foliage, strange plants grew in chaotic patterns, stretching around trees and creating webs of bramble. Looking too closely, one could even see the vines move as they reached for their next victim. Only a miniscule path could be seen breaking the flora with small faerie lights guiding the way.  Upon noticing the path, some of the fae cautiously moved towards it, dodging the vines that reached for their legs. As they approached the path, a small building was barely visible as it seemed both near and far. The longer they stared at the path, the longer the distance stretched.
