Guthrie's "Even the Rat Was White."About this EventThis year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Robert V. Guthrie’s Even the Rat Was White (1976), a landmark work that critically examined the history of racism in psychology and related sciences. Guthrie exposed patterns of scientific racism within the field, illuminating the “whitewashing” of research, the persistence of biased measurement, and the contributions of early Black pioneers. The book had profound impact on students, scholars, and professional networks such as the Association of Black Psychologists.Fifty years after its publication, this symposium revisits Guthrie’s work to examine its enduring relevance. Bringing together scholars and practitioners, the program will explore developments in Black psychology since the 1970s, assess the contemporary role of racial justice activism in the field, and consider the ongoing presence and transformation of racism within psychology.This event is free and open to all, and attendees are welcome to join us for only a portion of the day. Her research developing optimal psychology (aka Optimal Conceptual Theory) deepens our understanding of spiritual/sacred science, the higher stages of human development, and how to achieve them. Her liberatory healing practices of the Optimization Process, HeartFeather Strategy, and Belief Systems Analysis have been proven effective across the African Diaspora, elevating human consciousness toward a holistic, integrative, optimal mindset leading to enhanced health, growth morally, spiritually, and energetically for individual and collective sustainable well-being. The Marcus Garvey Institute for Human Development has adopted Optimal Psychology as its second pillar after education.Dr. Monique Swift, proprietor of Swift Solutions Consultant Services, LLC, is a psychologist, a NJ Licensed Professional Counselor, and a NY Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She has over 30 years of clinical experience in the field of mental health and operates a private practice in Rahway, NJ where she specializes in couple's therapy and trauma. Dr. Swift is a subject matter expert on issues that form at the intersection of trauma and race. She actively serves on several boards including the Board of Advisors for Volunteers of America, the Newark Community Collaborative Board, the Board of Advisors for the Newark Community Street Team, and the Union County Juvenile Conference Committee under the Family Division of the Superior Court. Dr. Swift is an active member of The Association of Black Psychologist (ABPsi) where she served her local chapter for 2 terms as Recording Secretary followed by 2 terms as Chapter President. She served the National Board of ABPsi as Eastern Regional Representative for 1 term and currently sits as President of ABPsi. Dr. Swift has a special interest in spiritual coaching and holistic health.LocationThe event will take place on the 1st and 3rd floors of the Cummings Center building. The street address is 73 S. College Street Akron, Ohio 44325-4302 (on the corner of Mill and College Streets).AccessibilityA wheelchair accessible ramp is located on the northeast side of the building, near the main entrance. The building, including museum galleries and classrooms, is wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair is available to loan for those visiting. Visitors must scan the ParkMobile QR code and enter their vehicle license plate. Additional metered parking is available on College Street. Metered parking is $1/hour and is operated by the City of Akron via the Flowbird app.TransitLocal bus service is provided by Akron Metro. Stops closest to the Cummings Center are at Mill & College; E. Market & College; and Main & E.
