What to Expect
About Woodrow Nash
Woodrow Nash was born in Akron in the late 1940s and shaped by the culture of his neighborhood, the sanctified church, and the visual world of mid-century America. He began his career painting murals and illustrating for local organizations before moving to New York in 1975, where he worked as a fashion illustrator and created album art for major jazz labels.
His path took him through commercial art, technical illustration, and graphic design before he shifted his focus to sculpture in the early 1990s. That shift opened the door to the signature style he calls African Nouveau. His figures echo the elegance of Benin art and the flowing lines of Art Nouveau while honoring global tribal traditions. Collectors around the world now seek his work, from everyday art lovers to cultural icons.
Nash is also connected to Akron’s public art landscape through his involvement with the Sojourner Truth statue project, a landmark that honors strength, leadership, and legacy in the heart of the city.
