3rd Annual Fire N Ice Gala

🚀 A True Moon Landing Pioneer!

Joining us at our 3rd Annual Fire N Ice gala is former NASA Flight Controller James Allen Joki, a UW alum, who played a pivotal role in the Apollo 11 mission. Driven by President Kennedy’s ambition, Joki engineered the crucial Portable Life Support System (PLSS) that kept Aldrin and Armstrong safe during their 1969 moonwalk.

His work included recognizing flaws in existing systems and innovating a new voice-activated communication technology—all rigorously tested via zero-gravity simulations known as the “vomit comet.” His journey highlights the intersection of engineering, innovation, and perseverance that contributed to one of mankind's greatest achievements.
