General Description (Habitat and Season)
The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India. It is the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchhi people. The Great Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands are situated in the district of Kutch.
There are sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary and a breeding ground for some of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos. This is one of the hottest areas of India, with summer temperatures averaging 41°C and peaking at 49.5°C. Winter temperatures reduce dramatically and can go nearly 0 °C (32 °F).
Best season to visit GRK is September to April.

White-naped Tit, White bellied Minivet, Striolated bunting, Grey- necked bunting, Marshall’s Iora, Sykes’s Nightjar, Indian nightjar, Pained Sandgrous, Indian courser, Cream coloured courser, Grey Hypocolius, Red tailed wheatear, Southern grey shrike, Rufous-fronted Prinia, Sociable Lapwing, Step Grey shrike, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Bimaculated Lark, Desert warbler, Chestnut Bellied Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, , Stolizka’s Bushchat, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Common Whitethroat, European Nightjar, Water pipit, Common crane, Demoiselle crane, Indian Eagle Owl, Long- legged Buzzard, Merlin, Common Kestrel, Mcqueen’s Bustard, Montagu’s Harrier, Pallid Harrier, Marsh Harrier, Short-eared Owl, Pallid Scops Owl, Greater Spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Tawny Eagle.
Crab Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Great Knot, Ruddy Turnstone, Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-Tailed Godwit, Sanderling, Heuglin’s Gull, Pallas’s Gull, Black- headed gull, Gull-Billed Tern, Little Tern, Lesser- crested tern, Eurasian Oyestercatcher, Dunlin, Broad billed sandpiper, Great thick-knee, Eurasian curlew, Western reef egret, Great white Pelican, Lesser & Greater Flamingo, and many migratory water fowls.
Apart from birds it is also home to various unique mammals like illusive Caracal, Desert Cat, Striped Hyena, Indian and Desert Fox.
