Topics include Empedocles’ theory of group minds, Gorgias on discourse and cognition, Socratic dialogue as socially extended knowledge, and Plato’s Nocturnal Council as a model of collective mind. Discussions will also cover Plato’s and Aristotle’s views on political unity, the rhetorical strategies of tragedy, Stoic and Senecan accounts of social cognition, and later thinkers such as Origen and Proclus.
