Intro into Woodblock Printmaking is for beginners interested in learning about one of the oldest art forms in human history. 60,000 years ago prehistoric artists were etching designs in found objects, including wood. In this class students will learn how to carve designs into wood for the purpose of printing on paper. No experience is required and all are welcome. You will receive personalized instruction in a fully equipped classroom.

Day 1 Transferring designs to wood and carving:
 
Before carving begins students will learn about two types of designs common to printmaking to determine how to carve the design into wood. Several examples of woodblocks and prints will be shown and passed around the class. Students will be encouraged to practice both styles. Please bring photo reference material to transfer to wood or create your own designs (on paper and no larger than 5”x7”). Once the design has been finalized and transferred to wood the carving begins after a short demonstration of safe carving techniques. Using SBWI carving tools students will practice carving into wood planks and learn about different carving tools.

Day 2 Printing on Paper:

Using the woodblocks created on day 1 you will begin the process of printing on paper. All techniques taught during the class can be done at home with common household items and carving tools. Students will learn the process from beginning to end which includes safe cleanup procedures. You will learn about common mistakes and how to avoid them. The ink used in the class is water soluble with low odor. No heavy solvents will be used. No matter how hard we try, ink will somehow get on clothes so please bring an apron, coveralls or old clothes. The ink may take a few hours to dry so please take that into consideration when transporting prints home.
