On Guard - Tour of Prospect WW2 Air Raid Shelter

Step Back in Time:
Join us for a fascinating tour into the heart of our local wartime history. Explore the interior of the original air raid shelter and discover how civil defence was planned and implemented during times of crisis.

Learn about the vital contributions made by ordinary people on the Homefront — from the tireless work of air raid wardens to rationing, home safety precautions, and the roles of women and children during the war years. Gain insight into life in wartime Australia and how communities prepared for the worst.

The session includes a rare screening of a 1942 film showcasing an air raid warden demonstration, offering a powerful glimpse into the past.

Outside, stroll through commemorative gardens honouring those who served, and reflect on additional stories shared through display panels — including the moving tale of local war nurse Vivienne Bullwinkel and others caught in the theatre of war.

Please note there are 13 steep steps (with handrail) down into the air raid shelter. Some uneven surfaces. Wear closed shoes.
