The Q on Hallett
5 Hallett Street, Adelaide, Australia
Join us at the Q on Hallet for an intimate evening of Rebetika. Often called the “Greek blues”, Rebetiko grew out of the port cafés and tavernas of Piraeus and Smyrna amid the turmoil of the early 20th century. Blending Greek folk and Ottoman sounds, it gave voice to the heartache, longing, and fleeting joys of life in the underground of old Athens. These were songs of love and loss, but also of street fights, hashish, and Pr*son life — music born from struggle and spirit. Over the decades, Rebetiko evolved from the underground to become one of Greece’s most enduring musical art forms.
Local musician Kostas Barlas (guitar, vocals) will be joined by Theo Dounias (percussion) & Paul Dounias (bouzouki, banjo, vocals) of the Melbourne Rebetiko group Anatreptix (from anatreptikos, “subversive”) to share a handpicked set of songs from this bygone era. In the second half, they’ll be joined by Demeter Tsounis of Meraki ensemble on piano .
Raw, poetic, and defiantly human, Rebetiko remains one of Greece’s most enduring and moving musical traditions. Meraki’s last performance had the crowd up and dancing, be sure not to miss this one!"
