If you have walked along the towpath from the club down toward Staines recently, you have likely noticed the problem: plastic bottles, crisp packets, and discarded debris caught in the reeds and floating along the river edges. It is a frustrating sight for anyone who enjoys our local waterways. 

Instead of just watching it drift past, a group of us are heading out on Saturday morning, 30th of May, to do something about it.  We are spending three hours clearing this specific stretch of the Thames as part of Paddle UK’s Big Paddle Cleanup. This is a single-day project where you can see the direct, immediate impact of your efforts by the time we finish.

It is also a casual way to meet new people. You will be working directly alongside Surrey Canoe Club members, our local team, and neighbours who care about the area just as much as you do. Once the collection bags are full, we are all heading straight to The Kingfisher pub at about 1:00 PM to relax, swap stories, and grab a drink together. 

How you can join on the day:

On the Water Team: If you can paddle a boat in a straight line, we need you on the river to grab floating debris that can’t be reached from the shore (not suitable for absolute beginners).

On the Land Team: If you prefer to stay on foot, we need volunteers to clear the public paths and riverbanks. This is open to everyone, including youth volunteers and families.

Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Single-day attendance only)
Meeting Point: Surrey Canoe Club, Thames Side, Laleham, Staines-upon-Thames, TW18 1FA 
Social Gathering: 1:00 PM at The Kingfisher, Chertsey Bridge Road, Chertsey, KT16 8LF

We provide all the necessary kit—litter pickers, gloves, and bags—so you only need to bring yourself and spend as much time as you can. You do not have to join us for whole 3 hours.
