Barnaby Fitzgerald writes, “The exhibition is a group of still lives coupled with a group of figure paintings. They are distinct also because the fragmentary awareness of existence is more apparent in the still lives. Often, the sea leaves lovely fragments on the shore of existence. The context of such remnants is often unclear, as are the stories and poems of today and of antiquity. The sea is a kind of eternity that hasn’t swallowed everything. It salvages things by processes which it would be wise to leave undefined. In very much the same vein my figure paintings are also brief, often satiric even mystical efforts to visualize incomplete meanings and histories long in the public domain. The figure, even in ordinary parlance, is a calculation—or the explanation of otherwise impenetrable reasons for past actions or presentiments for ones in the future. Believing a picture is the trust that I try to deserve by trusting, in turn, the courtesy of the viewer.”

Barnaby Fitzgerald spent his childhood in Umbria, Italy, before receiving a Magistero degree in printmaking and drawing at the Istituto Statale d’Arte in Urbino. After studying painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he earned his BFA at Boston University and MFA from Yale School of Art, both in painting. In 1984, Fitzgerald joined the faculty at Southern Methodist University, where he taught painting and drawing for 39 years before retiring as Professor Emeritus of Art in 2023. Since then, he has divided his time between Dallas and Italy. The Meadows Museum presented the retrospective exhibition and catalogue "Barnaby Fitzgerald: An Eye for Ballast" in 2024.
