- **Event Description**: WORDS OUT LOUD As part of event offerings for Art at the Kent’s 2026 exhibit Throughlines at the Kents’ Corner State Historic Site, WORDS OUT LOUD, the popular Sunday afternoon fall reading series, returns to the Old West Church. For this year’s first of three readings, WORDS OUT LOUD: Don’t Forget to Write, welcomes Vermont poets Michael Dumanis (poetry) and Sasha Hom (fiction). 

To say “Don’t Forget to Write” is to remind travelers to “stay in touch,” to "send word" from afar, wherever they are. This year’s authors remember to write, and they do so creatively and intelligently in poetry and prose. 

Readings will be followed by receptions down the road at the Kent amidst the art on display for this year’s exhibit “Throughlines” where attendees may meet and chat with the authors and a selection of books will be available in the shop.

The WORDS OUT LOUD readings take place at the Old West Church at 3 o’clock. Guests should arrive early to allow time for parking and seating at this historic 200-year-old meetinghouse in rural Calais, bring layers for warmth, and leave pets at home. Open to all. Donations welcome at the door. 

With a few steps up into the vestibule, the historic Old West Church is not ADA accessible at this time. 

About the Writers
September 13:

Sasha Hom is a writer, goat farmer, yurt dweller, and homeschooling mother of four. She earned her MFA from Warren Wilson College as a Holden Minority Scholar. Her first novella, Sidework, published by Black Lawrence Press, was a New Immigrant Writing Series selection and winner of the 2025 Vermont Book Award in Fiction. She’s received support from the Elizabeth George Foundation, Sustainable Arts Foundation, Vermont Arts Council, and Friends of Writers and won the Brink Literary Journal Award for Hybrid Writing. Her work can be found at The Millions, Kweli Journal, Literary Mama, Leon Literary Review, and elsewhere.

Michael Dumanis is the author of Creature (Four Way Books, 2023), a finalist for the 2023 Vermont Book Award in Poetry, the National Jewish Book Award, and the Big Other Book Award. He is the author of one previous collection, My Soviet Union, winner of the Juniper Prize for Poetry, and the coeditor of the anthology Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century. He was born in the former Soviet Union and lived there until his parents were granted political asylum in the United States. He now lives in North Bennington, Vermont, where he teaches at Bennington College and serves as editor of Bennington Review.

WORDS OUT LOUD 2026 has been organized by poet Mary Elder Jacobsen with the support of the Art at the Kent curatorial team.
