About this Event

Overnight Hike — Yarra Valley (Victoria)

Theme: Slowing Down
Saturday 8th – Sunday 9th November | 11:00 AM (Sat) – 10:30 AM (Sun)
Starlings Gap Campground → Yarra State Forest Trails — ~20 km Return

Just beyond the edges of the Yarra Valley lies a pocket of forest where tall gums sway, lyrebirds call, and time feels like it moves a little slower. This overnight hike is an invitation to step away from the rush of daily life and into the rhythm of the bush. Our theme is Slowing Down to Listen—tuning into the land, to each other, and to the quieter parts of ourselves that are so often missed in the noise.

We’ll follow a winding forest trail from Starlings Gap, moving at a steady pace as we ascend ridges, cross creeks, and take in sweeping views of the valley below. By evening we’ll set up camp, cook together, and share reflections around the fire. At night, the canopy opens to the stars. In the morning, we’ll wake to birdsong, pack down, and walk back with a sense of renewal and clarity.

Pre-Hike Meet-Up
To help everyone feel prepared (especially first-timers), we’ll also host a gear check and social catch-up on Wednesday 29th October (evening, venue TBC). This will be a chance to go through all the essential gear, make sure everyone has what they need for the overnight adventure, and connect with the group before we hit the trail.

What to Expect
We’ll meet at Starlings Gap Campground and begin the hike into the heart of Yarra State Forest. The trail meanders through mountain ash forest and fern gullies, with sections of gradual climbing and descents. We’ll cover around 10 km each day with time to pause, reflect, and connect.

At camp, we’ll share a simple meal, rest beneath the trees, and spend the evening immersed in the stillness of the valley. The next morning, after breakfast, we’ll make our way back along the return route, finishing mid-morning.

About Us
Another Way (www.anotherway.au) helps adventurous spirits find their purpose, fulfil their potential and embrace the journey through transformational adventures, coaching and community. We believe in the power of nature and shared experience to bring people back to themselves and to what really matters.

About Matt
Another Way was founded by Matt Defina in 2023 after his own serious bout of burnout and panic attacks led him to deeply question his way of life and whether he was in integrity with his true purpose (spoiler alert – he wasn’t). Despite being a trained Organisational Psychologist, working in men’s mental health, and leading groups for over 10 years, Matt realised he hadn’t been telling the truth to himself.

This led him down a path of deep healing and honest self-work, and eventually to starting Another Way to help others move from surviving to thriving. Matt has trekked to Mt Everest Base Camp, co-facilitated two leadership programs up Mt Kilimanjaro, and now designs transformational retreat experiences for corporates, change-makers, and entrepreneurs.

About Pete
Pete is the Lead of Adventure Club and the Victorian Adventure Guide for Another Way. A nature photographer, professional educator and community builder, he is passionate about helping people reconnect with themselves and the outdoors. He has spent years exploring wild landscapes on foot, bike, and surfboard—always with a camera in hand and curiosity in heart.

Through Another Way, Pete brings a calm and grounded presence to every adventure, creating safe and welcoming spaces for people to slow down, reflect, and find connection in nature and with each other.
