¨If your spirit has always yearned to go "home" to the embrace of Mama Africa, this group travel experience will transform you. We will take a short but enlightening journey through some of West Africa’s best destinations. We will discover three of West Africa’s most intriguing nations Ghana, Togo, and Benin. From the historic streets, museums, and colorful culture of Ghana, to the kingdom lands of Togo and Benin, you will be humbled by the rich history of West Africa as well as its vibrant present. You will witness the spiritual way of life called vodou that honors the ancestors and calls upon the spiritual essence of all things to help us in our everyday life. Our trip will also bring us to the village of Ouidah in Benin for the annual international vodou festival.
Our logistics company and guides of choice for this magnificent group trip to West Africa is Easy Track Ghana who have been helping international visitors explore Africa safely and joyfully for nearly 15 years. Haitian American Connections Center members will also be on the trip, and we will also have an additional cultural expert and trip facilitator with us.
The total trip cost of $3,400 and is ALL INCLUSIVE including round trip air from Miami, Florida, all modern, comfortable, and air-conditioned transportation in country, all double-room hotel accommodations, all food (3 meals per day) and non-alcoholic beverages, expert tour guides and interpreters, security, all tour admission costs, cultural performances/entertainment, and entrance to the Ouidah Benin International Vodou festival. DAY ONE (MAR 20)
We fly*** into Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Comfortable and safe transport to your hotel in an air-conditioned Coaster. Refresh and relax. Group orientation, dinner, and evening welcome to Ghana party. Enjoy the ambiance of URBANO Hotel.
DAY TWO (MAR 21)
We meet our city guides at 8:30 am to depart on a guided tour of the incomparable West African city of Ghana. Visit Kwame Nkrumah Monument, Independence Square, historic Jamestown, W.E.B. Du Bois Center, fashionable Oxford Street in Osu. After dinner, you are invited to a private African fashion show, hair wrap demonstration, and pop-up store at our own hotel.
DAY THREE (MAR 22)
The next day (Tuesday, Jan 5) we depart after a leisurely fresh breakfast for a haunting and emotional visit to Cape Coast, once the largest slave-trading center in Africa. Before arriving in Cape Coast, vist an extravagant POSUBAN SHRINE in Mankessim. In Cape Coast, be prepared to visit the UN World Heritage site and former slave dungeon of Cape Coast Castle. We spend the next two nights at a beach resort in Elmina called Coconut Grove Hotel.
DAY FOUR (MAR 23)
Good morning departure after breakfast to traverse West Africa's highest rain forest canopy walkway in Kakum National Park. Visit the crocodile ponds and a weaver bird community at Hans Botel. Stop to relax at a stunning Cape Coast Beach. Dinner with evening cultural performance and drumming.
DAY FIVE (MAR 24)
Today we drive east to the coastal village of Ada when the Volta River empties into the ocean. A guide from the Ghana Wildlife Division will help us with exotic bird and turtle sightings. We will visit Songor Lagoon, a natural salt mining area and natural resource. We will rest, dine, and stay overnight at Maks Resort on the banks of the Volta River.
DAY SIX (MAR 25)
Friday January 8 morning to relax at the hotel, walk the beach, and enjoy the cool clean air of the Ada region of Ghana. Mid morning departure to the country of Togo, border crossing, passport stamp, and visa check. From there we continue to our hotel in Lome City. (2.5 hour total drive time.) Lome City tour as time permits with dinner on the beach and overnight at the charming CoCo Beach resort.
DAY SEVEN (MAR 26)
Morning visit to the incomparable Akodessawa Fetish Market where herbs, animals, and many other natural items are used as medicine as well as spiritual ritual. It is called the world's largest voodoo market. Because of its graphic nature and displays of dead animals, this visit is optional. Guests who choose not to go will be offered another activity. We continue into the country of Benin, first stopping at the town of Allada, the home of the Haitian liberator Toussaint L'Ouverture. We arrive in the early evening to Ouidah, Benin and to our two nights at La Casa del Papa.
DAY EIGHT (MAR 27)
The day so many on this journey have been waiting and preparing for: Today we experience and celebrate the vodoun/spiritual way of life. We will explore Benin Ouidahl, West Africa's most colorful spiritual and cultural community that year round features devotees in ritual, chanting, possession, dancing to sacred drums, libation, prayer, performance, food, drink, and horse racing on the beach. Whether you are an active participant or quiet observer, thie visit to Ouidah will be a memory that you will cherish and talk about for years. After our day of festivity, ritual, libation, and conversation, and divination, we overnight again in Ouidah.
DAY NINE (MAR 28)
Today our exploration continues in Ouidah, Benin with a visit its fetish market full of charms, sacred items, and traditional medicines. We will also visit the ancient Temple of Pythons, the beautiful Sacred Forest, and the powerful Door of No Return. Today you will feel the depth of West African roots and how faith, tenacity, and courage dwell there. Afternoon departure to Togo and dinner, cultural performance, and reflection at Coco Beach resort in Lome.
DAY TEN (MAR 29)
We leave in the morning to cross the borders to return to Accra. Along the way we have lunch and stop to stretch our legs at picturesque and inspirational points on the journey of about 5 hours. Overnight in Accra with optional late night visit to one of Accra's exciting nightclubs.
DAY ELEVEN (MAR 30)
The morning is yours to pack and explore or walk about Accra. We have a unique and memorable farewell dinner planned in a private typical family compound home with a special traditional blessing for our safe journey home. We arrive to airport two hours prior to our evening flight.
