Overview
Please join Kellie Kirksey, Ph.D. and Jamie Marich Ph.D. for this unique and inspiring interactive workshop. Set in the beautiful bushlands of Lake Macquarie, we will explore a practice model to better serve our marginalised and traditionally excluded populations. This trauma informed, therapeutic care model utilises traditional healing with a specific focus on African Indigenous methods of Dance, Drumming, Storytelling and Silence.
Outcomes
o Explore the 4 foundational elements of African Indigenous healing methods (Dance, Drumming, Storytelling and Silence) with common threads of other Indigenous healing practices across the globe.
o Explore links between traditional practices, bilateral stimulation (BLS/ DAS) and trauma focused therapies.
o Understand the value of discussing the cultural context, and historical significance of Indigenous practices in leading to enhanced cultural connection, attunement and empowerment for Indigenous, black and other people of colour.
o Develop greater cultural attunement and sensitivity in implementing self - tapping for BLS/DAS in trauma focused therapy.
o Discuss barriers for therapists (specifically if they are white) in delivering this content and knowledge to Indigenous, black and other people of colour.
o Explain links between social justice and change in our roles as human service professionals or clinicians and articulate 2-3 concrete steps of action that one can take in the days following the training.
